maple Parent Feedback Session regarding the Implementation of the Primary Years Programme
by Mr Dylan Hughes, Lower School Principal
The International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme (PYP), along with the Middle Years and Diploma Programmes, was adopted by the CDNIS Board of Governors in April 2006 after a 15-month feasibility study conducted by the school. Now, after 5 years of implementation, the school is nearing its PYP Evaluation Visit (21-23 March) by the IB Asia Pacific Office. As we near this major event, the Lower School Leadership Team seeks to gather parent perceptions on the implementation of the Programme.

EcoSmart
Our self-assessment for the Hong Kong Green School Award was submitted last week. Lower School scored 75.9%, Upper School 76.5%. Both equate to an IB score of 4. Although we do well in reducing energy consumption, plastic waste reduction and environmental education, we need to improve green purchasing policies, staff training opportunities and the implementation of carbon footprint guidelines in school operations. The site assessment will take place between March and May.

Nurse Karla Reports - Stay Home If You're Sick
If your child is complaining of feeling unwell, please take their temperature. If it is 37.5 celcius or higher, please keep them home. Your child should stay home until their temperature is lower than 37.5 for at least 24 hours. Please inform your child's teacher of absences longer than 1 day.

Influenza
The school has noticed a recent increase in the number of sick students and staff. The influenza virus in more prevalent from January to March. If your child has flu symptoms, including fever, cough, sore throat, runny nose, muscle aches and pains, headaches, and possibly diarrhea and vomiting, please do not send them to school but take them to the doctor. No Hat, No Play!
The sun will be shining at full force again shortly, but it is important to set and maintain safe-sun habits throughout the year. Please be reminded that students must be wearing a hat (not the hoody) in order to play outside. Students who do not have a hat will be asked to play indoors. The uniform shop does have two styles of hats available for specific grade levels, although students may also bring their own hats from home. Please ensure hats are clearly labeled with child's name and homeroom. It is best to keep the hat at school so that it is available each day.

University Profs Coming to CDNIS

One of the biggest challenge parents face with children in high school is preparing them for their post secondary transition. Applying to universities around the world today involves a holistic application that will ask your son or daughter to reflect on the factors that influenced their university choices and the programmes they pursue. For many parents, this will often mean considering university summer programs abroad. These programmes are typically subject specific programs that are designed to give students a sampling of what they may expect in university and provide them with the opportunity to experience the culture of another country.

The Canadian International School of Hong Kong is pleased to announce we have an alternative that NO OTHER school in Hong Kong can offer. In order to address the needs of our students and school community, we are bringing the universities to Hong Kong! CDNIS will host some of the most prestigious universities in the world this summer for week long programmes designed to challenge, stimulate and enrich your son or daughter's educational experience while offering them the opportunity to interact with professors from these schools. Schools and programmes offered include:

University of Cambridge - Politics, Philosophy and Economics,
Natural Sciences, Languages

Parson School Paris - Portfolio Design and Preparation

SCAD - Photography

For a very limited these programmes will be available to CDNIS students only. Please click here to see the brochures, describing each of the programmes. We encourage members of our school community to act early on these opportunities - the programmes will fill quickly once it is offered to the general public.

Any questions or inquiries can be directed to Simon Joyce (simonjoyce@cdnis.edu.hk) or Bob Bate (bobbate@cdnis.edu.hk)
